Ripple Tank in Forest and Lavender
Ripple interference: 5 point sources scattered over the water each send out circular waves 0.060 of the picture's height apart, fading with distance; the waves add up, so crests meet crests to rise and crests meet troughs to cancel, and the sources drift slowly, with the height drawn as a colour map.
Hearted by 1 person in the Gallery.
Good to know
- A ripple tank, a shallow glass tray of water lit from above, is a standard school demonstration of wave interference because the crests cast visible shadows on a screen below.
In art
- Bridget Riley's black-and-white painting Current (1964), made of closely ruled waving lines, uses the same interference to make a flat surface seem to shimmer and flow.
Made with Ripple interference.
