Cobalt Phase Waves
Synchrony: A grid of oscillators, each turning at its own natural rate (spread 0.21), is pulled toward the phases of the cells within 2 steps of it with strength 1.50; colour is the phase, with a bright line where it crosses zero, so patches marching in step, spreading waves and spinning vortices appear and move.

The mathematics
- If every oscillator were coupled to every other, the crowd would begin to fall into step once the coupling passed about 0.33, 1.6 times the width of the spread; with only near neighbours coupled, as here, the story is richer and patches and vortices appear instead.
In art
- Synchrony is a theme of installation art: banks of metronomes, flashing lights and clapping machines, in which an audience watches order appear without a conductor.
