Ringed Ripple Tank

Ripple interference: 6 point sources in a ring each send out circular waves 0.046 of the picture's height apart, fading with distance; the waves add up, so crests meet crests to rise and crests meet troughs to cancel, and the sources drift slowly, with the surface lit like water, glinting where it tilts toward the light.

The mathematics

  • With sources in a row the fans merge into beams, the way a diffraction grating sends each colour of light in its own set of directions.

In art

  • Bridget Riley's black-and-white painting Current (1964), made of closely ruled waving lines, uses the same interference to make a flat surface seem to shimmer and flow.

Made with Ripple interference.
