Lagoon Lava Lamp

Metaballs: 4 balls drift on slow looping paths; each adds a field (r / d) to the power 2.85, where d is the distance from its centre, and the surface sits where the sum reaches 1, so two balls that come close join with a neck and pinch apart again as they separate; the surface is shaded as glass that bends the background and glints at its rim.

Good to know

  • Computer graphics researchers used blobby surfaces like these in the 1980s to draw molecules and soft organic shapes; Jim Blinn published his version in 1982.

In art

  • Soft, merging forms are a recurring theme in modern animation, from title sequences to the screensaver, because they look alive without being any particular creature.
