Sand Figure No. 105
A square plate is shaken in modes 9.90 and 2.85, so its height is cos(n pi x) cos(m pi y) minus a weight times cos(m pi x) cos(n pi y), and the weight swings slowly; the picture shows how hard each part of the plate moves, with the still lines dark, so the figure keeps re-forming as the pitch is swept.
Hearted by 1 person in the Gallery.
Good to know
- Violin makers have used Chladni patterns to tune the top and back plates of an instrument, tapping the wood and watching where the sand gathers.
In art
- Cymatic images, with their fine symmetric lines, are often paired with music, from album covers to installations in which a speaker shakes a plate of sand.
Made with Chladni plate.
