Navy Op-Art Study
Moire patterns: Two gratings of lines and spokes, about 28 to the height of the picture, are laid over one another, the second -5.25 percent finer and turned by 7.27 degrees, and slowly turning and breathing; each is ink printed over the last, and the broad fringes that appear belong to neither grating.
Hearted by 1 person in the Gallery.
The mathematics
- A tiny turn of one grating swings the fringes through a large angle, which is why moire can measure the strain in a part to a small fraction of a line spacing.
In art
- Op art painters such as Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely, and the 1965 exhibition The Responsive Eye at the Museum of Modern Art, made moire-like shimmer a subject in itself.
Made with Moire patterns.
