Jade Chladni Figure
A square plate is shaken in modes 7.76 and 6.06, so its height is cos(n pi x) cos(m pi y) minus a weight times cos(m pi x) cos(n pi y), and the weight swings slowly; the picture shows how hard each part of the plate moves, with the still lines dark, so the figure keeps re-forming as the pitch is swept.
Hearted by 1 person in the Gallery.
The mathematics
- The figures are standing waves, the eigenmodes of a drum or plate; the same patterns, in the language of quantum mechanics, describe the allowed states of a particle in a box.
In art
- Cymatic images, with their fine symmetric lines, are often paired with music, from album covers to installations in which a speaker shakes a plate of sand.
