Maze in Amber and Seafoam

A perfect maze (one way, and only one, between any two cells) of about 34 cells along its longer side, grown by Prim's algorithm, which grows the maze outward from one cell by joining random cells on its edge, so it is full of short branches, drawn as its walls, as lines, cut to a diamond, its colour running along the order in which it was carved. It draws itself in the order the passages were dug.

Good to know

  • A labyrinth and a maze are not quite the same thing: a labyrinth, like the one laid in the floor of Chartres Cathedral about 1200, has a single winding path with no choices, while a maze has branches and dead ends and has to be solved.

In art

  • A maze is a drawing that can be read in two ways: as a pattern, from a distance, in which the walls make texture and rhythm, and as a puzzle, up close, in which every junction is a choice; pen-and-ink labyrinths, plotter art and generative posters all play on that doubleness.
