Scarlet Merging Drops

Metaballs: 5 balls drift on slow looping paths; each adds a field (r / d) to the power 3.53, where d is the distance from its centre, and the surface sits where the sum reaches 1, so two balls that come close join with a neck and pinch apart again as they separate; the surface is shaded as glass that bends the background and glints at its rim, with rings of equal field strength drawn around it.

Good to know

  • Metaballs were developed in the 1980s: Jim Blinn used a Gaussian field for molecules in 1982, and a Japanese group coined the name metaballs in 1985.

In art

  • The psychedelic posters and light shows of the late 1960s made flowing blobs of colour a symbol of the era, and the lava lamp is the household version.

Made with Metaballs.
