Shifting Vibrating Plate
A square plate is shaken in modes 8.79 and 10.84, so its height is cos(n pi x) cos(m pi y) minus a weight times cos(m pi x) cos(n pi y), and the weight swings slowly; the plate is split into two flat tones along the still lines, so the figure keeps re-forming as the pitch is swept.

The mathematics
- A plate bends rather than stretches, so the frequency of a mode grows with the square of its wave number, roughly with n squared plus m squared; doubling the pitch more than doubles the detail.
In art
- Cymatic images, with their fine symmetric lines, are often paired with music, from album covers to installations in which a speaker shakes a plate of sand.
Made with Chladni plate.
