Bubble Skin No. 672
A film of average thickness 450 nanometres, varying by about 580, is stirred three times by noise into marbled swirls and drains toward one side; for red, green and blue light the reflected brightness is sin squared of (2 pi n d divided by the wavelength), with n = 1.27, so where the thickness differs the three colours fall out of step and bands of magenta, blue, orange and green appear; thin film is dark, thick film washes pale, and the whole film slowly flows.

Good to know
- A film in a vertical soap bubble drains downward under gravity, and at the top it gets so thin, a few tens of nanometres, that the reflections cancel and it turns black just before it bursts.
The mathematics
- The colour at a point is (sin squared of the phase) for each of red, green and blue, with phase = 2 pi n d / wavelength; where the phases happen to agree the film looks white, where red and blue are strong and green weak it looks magenta, and so on, which is why a spectrum of colours appears rather than a single hue.
Made with Soap film.
